Treadwell Park Receives Major Upgrade Thanks to Collaborative Efforts

ESPN, Nike, and Local Initiatives Team Up to Revitalize Community Space

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Demonstrating a commitment to enriching its parks, Memphis has made an effort to enhance community well-being. Among the city's green spaces, one park emerged as a prime candidate for revitalization. With the generous support of ESPN, Nike, and several other organizations, substantial improvements have finally come to fruition.

Treadwell Park, nestled in Highland Heights, now stands as a beacon of recreation and opportunity for the neighborhood's children. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of ESPN's Return to Play initiative and Nike, the park has undergone a remarkable transformation. Equipped with a cutting-edge basketball court and a mini soccer or futsal court, it offers children a safe haven for self-expression and physical activity.

Dr. Marie Faegins, Superintendent of MSCS, expressed her enthusiasm for the project's impact on the community.

"So excited for the Treadwell Community," The newly appointed superintendent said. "It is so important, when we are able to provide opportunities just like this one to allow students to explore the power of sports but also just moving and play and focus on learning outside the classroom."

The significance of this renovation is not lost on Memphis legend Penny Hardaway, who reminisced about his own upbringing in the Heights.

"This is how I was raised, and to see how beautiful this park is, it gives you an opportunity to dream," said Hardaway, who spent his early years running sprints in the park. "This park means everything to me. To see this park compared to what it was when I was here. It is just a beautiful thing, and I am very happy for the kids in this area."

The park's new facilities are poised to attract children from the neighborhood, while also fostering the growth of soccer through partnerships with organizations like Play Where You Stay and Love Futbol. Drew Chafetz, Co-Founder and CEO of Love Futbol, emphasized the importance of accessibility in sports: "Making sure kids can walk and pick up a ball and just play, it is as simple as that."
