Mya Jones becomes the first Memphis Women's Soccer player drafted by a National Women's Soccer League team
Jones was selected to the San Diego Wave in the third round of the 2024 Draft late Friday night.
After the draft the Wave's head coach expressed her excitement to have Jones on her squad.
"Yeah we didn't think we would get Mya, we thought she would go sooner, i think because she takes an international spot, potentially is one of the reasons," Casey Stoney, head coach of the San Diego Wave FC, said. "This young player has got a lot of talent. The way she can go 1-v-1. The way she can go inside and outside. I think she is a very positive attacking player."
Jones, a fifth-year senior out of Calgary, Alberta, finished her Tiger career with 26 goals and 27 assists in 93 matches played. Jones made the United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team and is a Scholar All-American.
The forward was also selected to the American Athletic Conference postseason awards list all five years and was named as the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Female Amateur Athlete of the Year in 2023.
During her final season at Memphis she netted nine goals and bagged 11 assists en route to being name named AAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Jones led the Memphis Blue to three straight AAC titles from 2021-2023.
In the 2023 season, Jones led the conference in assists per game, points per game, total assists and total points.
Jones helped lead Memphis to a historic 2023 season. the Tigers posted a 20-2 overall record during the and a perfect 9-0 spot in American Athletic Conference play – the first women's team in the conference to finish the regular season without a dropping any points.
The 2024 NWSL season kicks off March 16th.
