Memphis Grizzlies sign rookies Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells to multi-year deals, acquire rights to Cam Spencer

The Memphis Grizzlies have officially put pen to paper with two of their three draft picks. They also acquired the rights to Cam Spencer from the Detroit Pistons.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies have officially signed 2024 first round draft pick and No. 9 overall Zach Edey and second round draft pick and No. 39 overall Jaylen Wells to multi-year contracts. On Saturday the Grizzlies also acquired the draft rights to No. 53 overall pick Cam Spencer from the Detroit Pistons as part of a four-team trade.

The specifics of those deals were not released by the Grizzlies but based on where Edey was selected in the draft, his will be a four-year deal worth up to $26.2 million.

Edey's signing comes off the back of a stellar college career which saw him win every National Player of the Year award (six total) in both his junior and senior seasons at Purdue.

Despite his accomplishments in college, many questioned why the Grizzlies drafted him so high but now FanDuel has him as the second most favored player to win Rookie of the Year.

Meanwhile NBA Draft Analyst Jonathan Givony with ESPN reports that Wells has agreed to a four-year, $7.9 million deal where the first two years are fully guaranteed.

Wells started his collegiate career at Division II Sonoma State, he spent two years there before transferring to Washington State for one season where he earned Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

When Wells was introduced to the media last Friday he said, "honestly if you asked me when I was a freshman at Sonoma State I’d be thinking I’m gearing up for my 4th year. Being in this seat is surreal.”

With Edey and Wells both locking up roster spots that leaves one available position and one two-way spot.

Cam Spencer, who the Grizzlies acquired the draft rights to from the Detroit Pistons on Saturday will most likely utilize the last two-way deal. While Luke Kennard could very likely take up the 15th and last spot. Just last week Memphis declined Kennard's $14.5M team option but it was reported both sides were still interested in a restructured deal.

The Grizzlies will begin Summer League play on Monday in Salt Lake City. They are yet to announce the roster but expect Edey, Wells and Spencer to get playing time.
