David Jones named to Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list

Jones is averaging 21.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. He leads the Tigers in all categories.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Tigers senior David Jones has had a sensational basketball season. Without a doubt, he is the Tigers best and most consistent player this year. Now he's being rewarded for that consistency, being named to the watch list for the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Oscar Robertson Trophy.

Jones is one of 40 players across the country up for consideration for National Players of the Year honors and All-American status. Jones, out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is averaging 21.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game this season.

A player has not averaged those numbers since Duke's Zion Williamson in 2018-2019.

The transfer from St. John's is second in the American Athletic Conference in double-doubles (9), seventh in the nation in scoring, 18th in free throws made (150), 19th in total steals (60), 21st in field goals made (194) and 41st in three-point percentage (39.1).

A Tiger has not reached All-American status since Chris Douglas-Roberts did so on the 2008-2009 Tigers team that went to the national championship game.

Memphis returns to the floor Thursday, when they face East Carolina in Greeneville, South Carolina. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
