MEMPHIS, Tenn — Memphis football head coach Ryan Silverfield has promoted Jordon Hankins to defensive coordinator, the university announced Wednesday. Hankins served as interim defensive coordinator for Memphis' 36-26 win over Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Hankins previously served as the Tigers linebackers coach and assistant special teams coordinator form 2021-2023. With Hankins as interim DC, the Tigers defense held Iowa State to zero yards rushing, a program bowl record and second all-time in in AutoZone Liberty Bowl history.

“We are very excited to promote Jordon to the defensive coordinator role,” Silverfield said in a release. “He has done a tremendous job in the development of our linebackers and implementing and creating our defensive scheme.”

Under Hankins, linebacker Chandler Martin was named First-Team All-AAC in 2023. Martin led the Tigers in tackles (87) and tackles for loss (12). He also had two interceptions, two sacked and two forced fumbles in the regular season.

Hankins replaces Matt Barnes as DC, who left the program to be Mississippi State's co-defensive coordinator.

“I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to serve the Memphis Football program as the defensive coordinator,” Hankins said. “The continued success and growth of the players and program is my top priority.”

In addition, Silverfield also promotes two other assistant coaches. Charles Clark will act as Deputy Head Coach and defensive backs coach. Jeff Myers will be the new Run Game Coordinator and offensive line coach.

Memphis finished the 2023 season 10-3, just the fifth team in program history to win at least 10 games.
