MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Just after earning the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor, Memphis Tigers senior David Jones earned an even higher honor.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association picked Jones as an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
The Dominican Republic native averaged 26.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game last week, helping Memphis to road wins over VCU and No. 21 Texas A&M.
He had 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals Wednesday at VCU, then recorded 29 points with seven rebounds, a pair of steals and two blocks against the Aggies on Sunday.
It was the first true road win over an AP-ranked team for Memphis since Feb. 2022 at Houston.
Jones, the leading scorer in the AAC at 20.1 points-per game, has recorded three-consecutive 20-point games and has five outings this season with 20-plus points, the most in the league.
Jones struggled to start the season after transferring from St. Johns, but broke out in a huge way in the Battle 4 Atlantis Semifinal against then-No. 20 Arkansas, becoming the first Memphis player since 2010 to record at least 34 points and four steals in a game, according to ESPN.
The senior forward was one of five players nation-wide to earn the honor, joining Mika Adams-Woods from St. Bonaventure, Enrique Freeman from Akron, Arthur Kaluma from Kansas State, and Tyler Kolek from Marquette.
The Tigers (7-2) are back home for the first time in a month Saturday when they host No. 13 Clemson for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
