MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Memphis Tigers football team is bringing in another alum to the coaching staff.
Reggie Howard will be the cornerbacks coach for the team. Howard has spent the last nine years coaching at both the collegiate and NFL levels, last serving as a defensive quality control coach for the Washington Commanders in 2023.
Howard played seven seasons himself in the NFL after two seasons with the Tigers.
“I am extremely excited to return home to the University of Memphis Football program and I'm all in.” Howard said. “I would also like to personally thank Coach Silverfield for providing this amazing opportunity.”
“We are excited with the addition of Reggie Howard to our staff,” Silverfield remarked. “It’s great to add another Tiger alum to the staff. Reggie will make a make a terrific impact not only on our cornerbacks, but on our defense as a whole and our entire program.”
Prior to Washington, Howard was on staff at Campbell University for two seasons. In his first season there, the defense ranked fourth in the FCS in turnovers gained (25) and defensive touchdowns (4) at season's end.
Howard went to Campbell after spending the 2020 season on staff at Memphis, where he was the program’s director of high school relations.
He spent seven years in the NFL, signing with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2000, then going on to play for Carolina (2000-03, 2006), the New Orleans Saints (2000), and the Miami Dolphins (2004-05).
A 2000 graduate from Memphis with a degree in marketing management, Howard was inducted into the Memphis Hall of Fame in 2018.
