Penny Hardaway announces his mother's cancer is in remission

Penny announced the news Monday on social media. He had previously referenced her health struggles while answering for the challenges of the 2023-2024 season.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — Penny Hardaway announced on social media Monday his mother's cancer was in remission.

The Memphis Tigers men's basketball coach made the announcement Monday on his Instagram page, saying his mother's, Fae's, throat cancer was in complete remission.

"God we give you all the praise," Hardaway said in his Instagram post. "I thank you for your favor for my mother."

Hardaway talked about his mother at the end of the disappointing 2023-2024 men's basketball season, which was completed by an upset loss to Wichita State in the AAC Tournament, referencing her health issues as a reason why the Tigers would not accept an invitation to the NIT after failing to reach the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s very difficult being the caretaker of my mother,” Hardaway said after the Tigers' 71-65 loss to Wichita State. “I have no help until I leave town. It’s just me."

He talked in depth about his mother's health struggles Thursday on MSCS's TaylorMade Sports, describing how he found her suffering from a stroke after coming home from a shootaround on the day of a game this past season.

"[I] had to call my cousin to rush her to the hospital while I went back to the game, and I went to the hospital after the game," Hardaway said on the radio show.

He also detailed health concerns dating back to the start of the 2023-2024 season, including battling COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Hardaway's Tigers started the 2023-2024 season at 15-2, rising to No. 10 in the AP Top-25 poll, before ending the season on a 7-8 run culminating in the major upset loss to 12-seed Wichita State.
