Memphis Tigers forward Tyreek Smith enters transfer portal ahead of opening game vs Mizzou

Smith was set to be a key part of Penny Hardaway's front court for the upcoming men's basketball season.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hours before tip-off of the Memphis Tigers men's basketball season, Tigers forward Tyreek Smith has entered the transfer portal, according to a University of Memphis spokesperson.

Smith came to the Tigers after playing for three other schools; most recently SMU in 2023-2024.

He averaged 8.2 points per game and 5.4 rebounds over 33 games for the Mustangs.

Smith played in the Tigers' preseason game against North Carolina, where he scored eight points and collected two rebounds. He sat out the exhibition against Alabama with an ankle injury, but did travel with the team.

"We can confirm that fifth-year senior forward Tyreek Smith is no longer with the Memphis men's basketball program," A spokesperson with the U of M said. "Tyreek informed the staff that he would like to explore other opportunities. We would like to thank Tyreek for his hard work and dedication while at the University of Memphis and wish him the best of luck."

The spokesperson confirmed with ABC24 that Smith will enter the transfer portal.

Memphis tips off against Missouri Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
