MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The #6/#8 ranked Memphis women's soccer team kept their dominant start to the season going on Sunday with a 4-2 win over Iowa State. The win followed a disappointing 3-0 loss for the men to Central Arkansas during the soccer double header at the Billy J Murphy Track & Soccer Complex.
The Memphis women opened the scoring in the 6th minute. Maddie Eskin with the near perfect shot off the crossbar turns into an assist as Anna Hauer sinks the goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later the Tigers doubled the score. Off a corner kick the ball ends up in front of Momo Nakao who nails it in off her right foot.
Iowa State grabbed their first goal in the 19th minute but the Tigers immediately hit back off a back heel from Ashley Henderson. The Tigers took a 3-1 lead at the half and held on to score 4-2 thanks to a brace from Hauer.
Memphis had 18 shots with 9 on goal compared to Iowa State's 6 with 2 on target.
The Tigers move to 4-0 to start the season and will be back home next Sunday when they host Kansas State at 8 a.m.
The loss for the Men's team sees them fall to 1-3 on the year, a season after they made the NCAA Tournament.
Despite outshooting the Bears 14-12 and putting seven shots on target, Memphis were unable to find the back of the net. Logan Longo and Adam Yousfi led the Tigers with three shots apiece. While keeper Filip Sabatti made five saves despite allowing goals in the fifth, 74th and 80th minute.
The Memphis men will now hit the road for the first time this season with a pair of matches in the Peach State. The Tigers head to Mercer for a 7 p.m. CT kick on Thursday before a 5 p.m. CT start at Georgia State on Sunday.
