Paris Preview, Tuesday, July 30: Women's gymnastics team final, key swimming showdowns

Team USA is favored to win the team gymnastics gold, with reigning champion Russia blocked from competing.

WASHINGTON — Day 4 of the 2024 Olympic Games will give Simone Biles her first chance to go for gold in Paris. Plus, a number of chances for Team USA to take home more medals in key swimming showdowns.

Here's a guide of what to look out for during Tuesday's competition at the Paris Olympics.

Women's gymnastics team final

The U.S. women's gymnastics team, led by Biles, will have a shot at redemption in the team final. During the last Summer Games, Biles bowed out partway through the competition after experiencing a medical condition known as the "twisties" that left her unable to gauge where the ground was while in the air.

Without her, the U.S. team won silver against Russia's gold. But with Russia barred from competing in 2024, the U.S. is a favorite to top the podium.

Biles put on a commanding performance in her return to the Olympics Sunday during qualifying, despite tweaking her left calf while warming up for floor exercise. Alongside Biles on the team are Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee and the youngest member of Team USA, 16-year-old Hezly Rivera.

It was confirmed Monday that Biles is in the lineup for all four events during Tuesday night's Olympic team finals.

Swimming

Diving into the pool, the U.S. has a shot at several gold medals on Tuesday. The U.S. is especially strong in the men's 800-meter freestyle, where reigning champion Bobby Finke has qualified for the final.

The women's 100-meter backstroke could also be another opportunity for Team USA to secure a medal for swimming.

Surfing

Thousands of miles away in Tahiti, the Olympic surfing competitions will have their gold-medal matches, if the weather holds up. U.S. surfer Griffin Colapinto made a strong showing in the opening day of competition.

BMX

The world's best BMX bikers will compete in qualifying for the BMX freestyle competition, flipping and performing tricks in the skatepark on the main stage at La Concorde.

Soccer

After losing to France 0-3 in their first match of the tournament and coming back to beat New Zealand 4-1 over the weekend, the U.S. men's soccer team faces Guinea in their last match of the group stage.

If the U.S. beats Guinea, they likely qualify for the quarterfinals - but there are a couple of scenarios where the U.S. could still be eliminated with a win.
