No. 8 Tigers win third straight American Athletic Conference women's soccer championship

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. — The Memphis Tigers women's soccer team are American Athletic Conference Champions for a third year in a row after a 2-1 win over SMU on Sunday.

After 40 minutes of even play Ashley Henderson opened the scoring.

Momo Nakao won the ball off of a SMU defender and Henderson took one touch and rifled the ball into the bottom right corner to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. 

The Mustangs looked to the level the score coming out of the half. 

In the 55' Wayny Balat sent a shot on frame but Memphis goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman saved the effort for her third stop of the day. 

The Tigers doubled the lead in the 72'. 

Delaney Tellex fired a shot across the face of goal and a the ball deflected off of a Mustang defender and trickled into the net. 

In the 79' SMU cut the lead in half thanks to a scrappy goal from Truth Byars.

The Memphis defense held strong for the the final 11 minutes to see out the win. 

Bierman, Jones, Tellex, Sarah Hagg and Momo Nakao were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Jones was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player while Hagg earned the Most Outstanding Defensive Player.

Memphis improves to 18-1 overall and earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament starting on Friday, Nov. 10.
