xAI announces expansion of Memphis supercomputer facility

Along with capital investment, the expansion of the facility will welcome Fortune 500 tech companies, NVIDIA, Dell and Supermicro Computer to Memphis.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — xAI announced the expansion of its “Colossus” supercomputer facility at the Greater Memphis Chamber Annual Chairman's Luncheon.

“We made history today”, said Greater Memphis Chamber President and CEO Ted Townsend, "This is expensive investment, and they have secured the capital to make that investment here.”

According to Chamber officials, the expansion will go toward establishing Memphis as a global epicenter for AI computing technology.

The project is already in development and will incorporate at least one million new graphics processing units. Officials with Greater Memphis Chamber said it will mark the largest capital investment in the region’s history.

When speaking on the economic impact of the expansion and the supercomputer facility in general, Townsend said, "It has a tremendous impact on our region, dare I say it’s going to be one of the fastest GRP‘s gross regional products in the country when all is said and done.”

Along with the capital investment, the expansion of the facility will welcome Fortune 500 tech companies, NVIDIA, Dell and Supermicro Computer to the Memphis area. Officials said the introduction of these companies will further cement Memphis’ place as the “digital delta”.

"When you talk about billions and billions of dollars been invested here locally that has a direct, indirect and induced impact on jobs and attracting further investment”, said Townsend.

To facilitate the expansion, the Memphis Greater Chamber has established the xAI Special Operations Team, which will be led by Townsend. According to officials, this team will provide round-the-clock concierge service to the company.

"In Memphis, we're pioneering development in the heartland of America," xAI official, Brent Mayo said during the luncheon. "We're not just leading from the front; we're accelerating progress at an unprecedented pace while ensuring the stability of the grid utilizing megapack technology."
