Drivers beware: Memphis Police under inclement weather crash policy, will not respond to every crash in the snow

Memphis Police said those involved in an accident should call the nearest police station to report the crash.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department announced Thursday night they are under their inclement weather policy due to the blowing snow and icy roads, and will not be responding to every crash reported until further notice.

While they are working under this policy, MPD said to do the following should you be involved in an accident:

  • Exchange names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information and tag numbers of the vehicles involved
  • Take photograph(s) of the damage and tag number of vehicles involved
  • Both drivers should call the nearest Memphis Police Station or the Memphis Police Traffic Office to report the accident. This should be done within five (5) working days.
  • An Officer or PST will complete a Crash Report or a “Non-Investigated Crash Report” (NIR).

Drivers should be especially cautious, as it may take several hours to clear an accident while officers are not available.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office also implemented a similar policy, saying they will not respond to crashes without injuries, alcohol or drugs inbolbed.

SCSO is telling drivers to arrange a time to meet at the Sheriff's Office substation, 11670 Memphis-Arlington Road in Arlington, within 10 days to report a crash.

We will update once Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office lift their inclement weather policies. For now, stay off the roads unless it is absolutely necessary.
