Woman killed in fiery crash with tractor trailer in northeast Shelby County identified

Tennessee Highway Patrol said 24-year-old Jessica Carlton was killed in Tuesday's crash.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The person who died after a three-vehicle crash with a tractor trailer Tuesday afternoon has been identified, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP).

At least one of those cars caught fire, trapping someone inside, Shelby County Fire said.

The crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 27, 2024,  at the intersection of Mudville Road and Austin Peay Highway (State Route 14) in northeastern Shelby County.

According to the preliminary report from THP, the tractor trailer was southbound on Austin Peay Highway and a Ford Expedition was north on the highway. Investigators said 24-year-old Jessica Carlton was headed east on Mudville Rd. in a Chevrolet Colorado when she tried to turn left to head northbound onto Austin Peay. At that point, troopers said the tractor trailer hit her driver door, causing her to crash into the Expedition.

Troopers said the Colorado overturned and caught fire, killing Carlton.

Investigators said the two people in the tractor trailer and an adult and 4-year-old in the Expedition were not injured. According to the report, no charges are pending in the crash.
