MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Get ready for some lane closures along one of Memphis’ main roads for the next several months.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin installing signs this week for a $4.2 million paving project along Poplar Avenue.

TDOT said 2.3 miles of Poplar Ave. between Perkins Extended and I-240 will be paved. Crews will be working seven days a week.

Single lane closures begin Sunday, March 27 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and will continue each night.

Weather permitting, daytime single lane closures will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on specific days following night paving, so work can be done on handicap ramps.

TDOT said the work is expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2022.

Poplar Avenue handles about 47,000 vehicles each day, and drivers are asked to plan ahead and find alternate routes as the work gets underway.

Poplar Avenue is a state road (TN State Road 72), which is why TDOT is handling the paving and repairs. The City of Memphis handles repairs and paving for city streets.
