MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people are dead and another person is injured after a crash involving a driver headed the wrong way on I-240 early Wednesday morning.
The Memphis Police Department responded to the three-vehicle crash May 29, 2024, just after 1:30 a.m. The crash happened westbound on the interstate near Poplar Avenue.
Investigators said a Dodge Durango was driving northbound on I-240W in the southbound lanes, against the flow of traffic, when the Durango hit a Subaru Outback headed southbound. MPD said the Durango then spun and struck an Acura TLX.
Investigators said three men and a woman were dead at the scene, including the Durango's driver and the driver and two passengers in the Outback. Another man, the driver of the TLX, was taken to a hospital in non-critical condition.
The incident blocked traffic for hours, with authorities reopening lanes just before 6 a.m.
TDOT cameras showed the Durango driving the wrong way before the incident happened:
The crash happened a few hours after a shooting left a man dead on I-240 near Poplar Tuesday evening, closing all westbound lanes. Investigators have not said if the two could be related.
