WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. — A West Memphis Police officer is in the hospital Wednesday morning after colliding with an 18-wheeler while off duty on I-55 just a few miles from the Mississippi River bridge coming into Memphis.

A spokesperson with the City of West Memphis said the off-duty police officer was in his personal car when he collided with an 18-wheeler around 8 a.m. Wednesday just past the I-55/I-40 split coming into Memphis.

The officer was taken to Regional One Hospital in Memphis in non-critical condition.

The crash has all but one lane of southbound traffic on I-55 closed coming into Memphis. Avoid the area for now and seek an alternate route.

West Memphis Police said in a statement, "The incident is currently under investigation by the Arkansas State Police, and we will continue to cooperate fully. Our thoughts are with the officer and their family, and we are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community."
