Man critical after 18-wheeler crashed into ambulance and fire truck on I-40

The crash happened on the interstate near Airline Road, just before Highway 385.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Westbound lanes on I-40 are closed early Friday morning due to a multi-vehicle crash.

Deputies with the Shelby County Sheriffs Office (SCSO) were actively working a car crash shortly after 1:30 a.m. on eastbound I-40, just west of I-269 and Highway 385 when the multi-car crash happened in the westbound lanes.

Deputies said an 18-wheeler hit the ambulance and fire truck responding to the earlier accident.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was critically injured and taken to Regional One Health.

A man from the earlier crash was taken to a hospital in non-critical condition.

All westbound lanes were closed down and first responders diverted traffic southbound on I-269, according to SCSO.

Drivers could use Highway 64 or 70 as an alternate route into Memphis.

Video footage of the scene was shared by SCSO in a social media post and can be seen below.
