MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis International Airport (MEM) is getting $5 million to help during the winter season.

MEM officials announced Friday, March 22, 2024, the airport received the federal funding as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024.

The money is going toward the construction of a Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) facility. The facility will house the snow removal equipment, providing protection from the sun and Ultraviolet exposure, which will keep the equipment functioning longer. SRE allows airport crews to keep runways clear in the snow and freezing conditions during the winter.

“This integral investment will help MEM continue to serve as a cornerstone of our region’s economic prosperity and connectivity during extreme weather events,” said Terry Blue, President and CEO. “We greatly appreciate Congressman David Kustoff and Congressman Steve Cohen for their steadfast support and advocacy to ensure accessible, safe, and reliable air transportation operations.”

Airports officials said MEM is the number one cargo airport in North America, and number two in the world, especially with Memphis-based FedEx. They said the airport served 4.8 million commercial passengers in 2023.
