CLARKSDALE, Miss — A new weather radar in North Mississippi will give government agencies better views of severe weather in the area, helping forecasters keep you safe when storms strike.
The radar was recently installed on a water tower in Clarksdale by Kentucky-based weather tech company Climavision. They plan to install 30 radars across the country by the end of this year, and hope to add more next year.
“Climavision’s new radar in the Mississippi Delta brings clarity to what’s happening in the atmosphere above these communities,” said Chris Goode, co-founder and CEO of Climavision. “The new technology will allow forecasters and emergency managers to track potentially life-threatening storms before they hit, bringing a new level of awareness to the people who live in the region.”
Government-owned weather radars in Memphis, Little Rock, and Jackson have left a gap in coverage in the Mississippi Delta for years. This means dangerous weather, like tornadoes, damaging wind, and hail, can sometimes be harder to spot in those areas.
This new radar will fill that gap and allow agencies, like the National Weather Service and emergency managers, better views of thunderstorms in this area.
A closer view of storms will help forecasters deliver more accurate and more timely weather alerts when severe weather strikes.
