Strongest earthquake since 2012 rattles parts of Northeast Arkansas and West Tennessee

The 3.8 magnitude quake was reported around 11:45 a.m. just north of Etowah, Arkansas.

ETOWAH, Ark. — The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.8 earthquake in Mississippi County, Arkansas on Wednesday.

The earthquake struck about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, and was felt across Northeast Arkansas and into West Tennessee.

Some reports of shaking have come in from as far away as the Memphis metro area.

A 3.8 magnitude quake is relatively weak when compared to other earthquakes. However, seismic waves from these earthquakes in this part of the country can travel longer distances and be felt further away.

It's the strongest earthquake reported in the area since a 3.9 magnitude quake struck near Parkin, Arkansas in October 2012.

The Mid-South sits near the New Madrid Seismic Zone and earthquakes like this aren’t uncommon.

No damage or injuries have been reported.
