MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Christmas is just around the corner, stores are full of shoppers, and presents are under the tree. It's about the time of year that people start to wonder if a white Christmas is possible.
In Memphis, the odds of a white Christmas are statistically pretty low. According to the National Weather Service, Memphis has only seen snow on the ground on Christmas Day seven times in the last 100 years.
Those years were 1962, 1963, 1966, 1980, 1990, 1998, and most recently in 2004. Most of these were from previous days' snowfall that remained on the ground by Christmas Day.
1962 was by far the most snow Memphis has seen on Christmas, with a total of 10" covering the ground.
Several other years have seen some flakes fly on Christmas Day, including in 2012, but it wasn't enough to accumulate on the ground and make for an "official" white Christmas.
So while it is rare, a white Christmas in Memphis has happened and could happen again.
But what about this year? You'll have to keep an eye on the latest ABC24 weather forecast to see if any snow is in our future.
