MEMPHIS, Tenn. — October really was a treat for us in the Mid-South. What was supposed to be a pretty uneventful month, saw two very rare sights in our sky. Around October 10th, we saw the Northern Lights in the region for the 3rd time this year. Very rare, but also a treat to see. We got in some photos from our nighttime ABC24 Weather Watchers showing the colors in our sky.
A bit later in the month we had a comet visit us in the evening sky. This was briefly visible with the naked eye before becoming only visible with cameras. Thankfully the very dry weather last month made for some nice views.
As we head into the month of November, expect a more "typical" month when it comes to taking a look at our night sky, There are some big changes on the way early on though. On November 3rd, we set our clocks back an hour as we enter Standard Time. The sunset this week will go from right after 6 PM to around 5 PM going into next week. Our earliest sunsets of the year are from December 2-6th occurring at 4:47 PM. The shortest days of the year occur later in the month.
Looking at what you will be able to see, outside of general stargazing we will have a close-up encounter of the Moon and Saturn around November 10th. These two will be right next to each other all night an easily visible so it is worth taking a look.
Speaking of the Moon, the Full Moon this month is known as the "Beaver Moon" it will be visible on November 15th and is once again a Supermoon meaning it will be slightly bigger in our sky.
The weather this week will be rather tricky for taking a look at the sky. We are starting a rather unsettled weather pattern meaning there will be some clouds on the way. This is pretty typical for late Fall and going into the Winter as these are some of the cloudier months of the year.
