How much snow fell in Memphis and the Mid-South?

Multiple inches of snow fell across the Mid-South with some getting more than others.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Waking up on Monday in the Mid-South almost everyone saw snow covering the ground. A system that had started to drop flakes on Sunday afternoon ended up over-producing snowfall in the region leading to one of the snowiest winters we have seen in a few years.

The forecast from the ABC24 Weather Team included a swath of 4-6 inches of snow along and just south of the I-40 corridor. There was mention of maybe some sleet mixing in in northern Mississippi but, the confidence was very high going into the event this would be snow for all of the area.

Looking at total accumulations as of Tuesday the 16th, it looks like the forecast played out. The narrow band of enhanced snowfall did indeed set up between I-22 and I-40. The Memphis metro ended up with 4 to 6 inches of snow with amounts ranging from 6 to 8 inches out to the east.

The highest snowfall total in our area was in McNairy County. Adamsville ended up with 8 inches of snow. Selmer was not far behind with 7 inches of snow.

Portions of DeSoto country near Horn Lake saw amounts of over 7 inches. Collierville ended up with 6.5 inches of snow with downtown Memphis just under 5 inches.

Memphis International Airport saw slightly lower amounts of snow totaling 3.4 inches. While this is on the lower end for Shelby County, this still puts Memphis above the average amount of snowfall which is around 2.21 inches.

In fact, this ranks Memphis at the 10th snowiest winter in the past 40 years which is rather impressive considering other parts of the city saw even more snow.

If you are not a fan of the colder weather and all the snow we saw this week there is some good news coming from the Climate Prediction Center. It looks like the end of this month should be ending above average for this time of the year.
