September Lunar Eclipse will occur during a Supermoon

September will feature plenty to see including planets, the Moon, and even an eclipse.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — August was quite the exciting month featuring warm, clear nights that turned out perfect to view the night sky here in Memphis and the Mid-South. We once again got some photos from our ABC24 Weather Watchers that included multiple views of the Moon as well as some astrophotography from out in Collierville featuring the Andromeda Galaxy. If you would like to be featured in next month's night sky update make sure to join our ABC24 Weather Watchers Facebook Page and share any photos that you get of the night sky here in the Mid-South.

As we go into the month of September, cloudy weather will keep us from seeing anything good short term but, clearer weather will hopefully lead to great views of the International Space Station on the evening of September 12 as it passes directly over the Mid-South.

September 14th is International Observe the Moon Night so try to get a look at our closest partner in the Solar System as people all around the Earth plan events to take a look up at the Moon!

Speaking of the Moon, the Full Moon for the month will once again be a Supermoon and occur on the 17th. This month's moon is known as the "Harvest Moon", given the name for the harvesting season which begins in September.

Also on the 17th, a Partial Lunar Eclipse will be visible in the US. The Moon is expected to partially pass into the Earth's direct shadow called the Umbra reaching max eclipse around 9:44 PM in Memphis. If skies are clear for sure take a look at this event!

If you are looking at planets to view this month, Mars and Jupiter will be visible in the Eastern morning sky each day of September. Mars is very easy to recognize with its reddish hue compared to the other things we can see in our night sky.
