Weather Impact: Heat index as high as 110° today

Heat and humidity will make a dangerous combination in the Mid-South this week, with heat index values between 105° and 110°.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Thursday across much of the Mid-South, including Memphis, from sunrise to sunset.

This forecast for high heat index values across the Mid-South has prompted a Weather Impact Day from the ABC24 Weather Team. This means the extreme heat will have an impact on your day-to-day activities on Thursday.

When will the worst of the heat be here?

The heat index this afternoon will be as high as 110° in parts of the Mid-South. Expect the most dangerous heat between 11 a.m. this morning and 8 p.m. this evening.

How does this impact outdoor plans?

You should plan any daily outdoor activities to be either early morning or late evening. That is when the temperatures will be the coolest. Granted, it will still feel quite muggy, it won't be as hazardous to work out, mow the lawn, or any other strenuous outdoor activity.

What do I need to do to stay safe?

Make sure to drink plenty of water. Hydration is the first step in preventing heat illness, but it take your body time to absorb it. Drinking water the night before extreme heat sets your body up with plenty of water to sweat out during the heat. Continue to hydrate through the day, even before you begin to feel thirsty.

The hottest part of the day is when you should avoid strenuous activity outdoors. Exercise, yard work, and other outdoor jobs should be avoided if possible during this time. If you are not able to avoid it altogether, there are some steps to take to stay safe.

  • Work in the shade, avoiding direct sun exposure
  • Wear light-color, loose-fitting, moisture-wicking clothes
  • Wear sunscreen and re-apply
  • Take frequent breaks in air conditioning

Child and pet safety is another concern with hot weather. Don't leave a child or a pet in a hot car where they can quickly become overheated risking serious injury or death.

As a reminder, always double check the backseat every time when leaving your car. Consider placing a stuffed animal or toy up front as a reminder, or put your purse or other item you would pick up in the backseat with your child.

Don't forget about your pets! Bring them inside to cool down and make sure they have plenty of water. When walking your pets, remember that the pavement can be hot enough to burn their paws. Walk your pets early in the morning or late in the day, and keep them in the grass and off the pavement.

Keep up-to-date with all of the latest forecast from ABC24 on air and online.
