SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — On Monday, March 4, a fight broke out during a basketball game between Ridgeway High School and Bolivar Central High School, leading to two women being arrested and the game being postponed.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) confirmed that while deputies were working at the basketball game at Ridgeway High, a fight began between two 18-year-old women and an 18-year-old man around 6 p.m.
The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) said the fight, which broke out while players were warming up during halftime, involved a cheerleader and fans, and no players from either school were involved in the fight.
As deputies attempted to stop the fight, the man involved ran from the scene, according to the SCSO. Deputies told the women to stop fighting, but because they ignored their orders, they pepper sprayed them, which finally stopped the fight.
Both women were arrested and issued a misdemeanor citation for simple assault. There were no other injuries, according to the SCSO.
TSSAA said the basketball game will continue at Ridgeway High on Wednesday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the BlueCross Basketball Championships in Murfreesboro.
