MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of running over a Shelby County Deputy with his car, and injuring another one on the fourth of July 2022, was found guilty of illegally possessing a firearm by a federal jury.

Months before the July 4 incident, 25-year-old Charlie Gibson was arrested by Memphis Police after security guards searched Gibson and found a gun and hundreds of grams of marijuana.

Now, Gibson was found guilty of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and having a firearm during commission of a crime. He faces 20 years in federal prison.

In a separate incident, Shelby County deputies responded to an assault call at Durhamshire Cove, Cordova, on July 4, 2022. When the deputies arrived, they saw Gibson who driving the same type of car as the suspect. One of the deputies stood up in front of the car and ordered Gibson to stop the car, but he instead drove forward, hitting the deputy, who rolled onto the hood of the vehicle. The deputy then drew his gun and shot at Gibson, as Gibson revved the engine. The deputy hit Gibson, who then crashed the car.

Charges from both incidents were combined in November 2023. Gibson will not be eligible for parole as parole does not exist in federal court.
