Memphis-Shelby County Schools closing early due to Tropical Storm Francine remnants

The school district also cancelled all after school activities for Thursday.

Tensions reportedly rising at MSCS as a scathing letter and the approved resolution of general counsel could put limitations on the superintendent.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) announced they're closing early Thursday, Sept. 12 due to effects from the remnants of Tropical Storm Francine.

The district announced they will close all schools early "out of an abundance of caution," and all after-school activities are cancelled.

MSCS said on their Facebook page schools will close at the following times, according to their start times:

  • Schools with a 7:15 a.m. start time will close at 11:30 a.m.
  • Schools with a 8:15 a.m. start time will close at 12:30 p.m.
  • Schools with a 9:15 a.m. start time will close at 1:30 p.m.

The district said they will follow all normal dismissal procedures, and buses will pick up students at the times scheduled above. MSCS also said they are serving meals to students before dismissal.

Hurricane Francine made landfall Wednesday in Louisiana as a category 2 hurricane, bringing high wind, heavy rain, and storm surge to coastal areas.

Francine is now moving further inland, bringing impacts to Memphis and the Mid-South Thursday and Friday as the storm continues to weaken.
