MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s not summer just yet, but as temperatures start climbing closer to the 90s, professionals are urging you to start getting your home ready for the heat.
Summer is one of the busiest times of the year for air conditioning companies across the Mid-South. And as summertime quickly approaches, Choate's Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing said now is the time to start getting your air conditioning units checked, starting with the filters.
"Change that air filter. Always know when you last changed it,” said Choate’s maintenance technician Dylan Matthews.
Choate's also emphasized the importance of getting your condenser cleaned to keep it running as efficiently as possible.
“First, we evaluate the electrical to make sure that's all squared away," Matthews said. "And then, we break those units down and spray them with chemicals, then spray them with water from the inside out, so it pushes that dirt out. That unit is not breathing. And if it's not breathing, it's using a lot more electricity that will cost you money.”
The U.S. Department of Energy also offered some tips to save money in the summer, including installing window coverings, buying cooler light bulbs, like LED lights, and sealing all cracks and openings around your home.
Experts said these tips along with preventative maintenance for your air conditioner are key to saving money in the long run.
