MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The fiasco that is the Shelby County Clerk's Office is only getting worse.
We told you Monday night about poor Thalia Hayman who moved here from the D.C. area a couple of weeks ago. All she wanted was to register her car in Tennessee. She tried three times.
On the fourth try, after waiting in line for five hours, the Clerk's Office on Mullins Station decided to close two and a half hours early and sent Hayman home.
This is embarrassing, frustrating and inexcusable.
Hayman's one of many who are having to miss work just to wait in line for hours so they can legally drive in Shelby County.
It's not a lot to ask for, but when we asked Clerk Wanda Halbert about it, she of course made no apologies. She's too busy pointing fingers at everyone else.
Mayor Lee Harris, the County Commission, and her predecessor are all getting blamed even though a state investigation found nothing to her complaints.
Wednesday, Shelby County commissioners are expected to take up a resolution asking Halbert to fix broken kiosks, hire the staff she needs and open a new location.
Resolutions are nice, but since Halbert was elected to office, that's not going to get the job done. One or more elected officials need to take this to the state Attorney General.
