Alex Simmons collects 100th win behind 79-74 Tigers victory

Alaysia Smith and Hannah Riddick chipped in 18 points a piece as Memphis beat Rice, 79-74

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Alex Simmons collected her 100th career win as a head coach, Tuesday, when the Memphis Tigers beat Rice in overtime, 79-74.

Alaysia Smith continued her dominant season with a 18 point, 14 rebound double-double. It was her eighth double-double of the season. Hannah Riddick added 18 points of her own and added four rebounds. She also shot 7-of-8 from the field. Maddie Griggs scored 12 points and dished seven assists.

Dominique Ennis led the Owls with 21 points and six rebounds. Destiny Jackson added 17 points.

Memphis had a chance to end it in regulation. Tied 66-66, with three seconds left, Griggs had a wide open three that missed at the buzzer. In the overtime period, Memphis battled from three points down. A free throw from Riddick made it 71-69 with 2:44 to play. 

The junior followed that up with an assist to Smith for a three-pointer to take the lead, 72-71 and the Tigers never gave the lead back. The win moved them to 10-15 on the season and 6-8 in conference play. Simmons record as a head coach is now 100-74.

Memphis returns to the floor Saturday when they play Tulane in New Orleans. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
