MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Airport Police have released pictures of the suspects in the attempted carjacking and shooting of a rideshare driver in the airport's cell phone parking lot.
The Memphis Airport Police Department (MAPD) responded to shooting Monday, June 10, 2024, just after midnight in the area of Jim McGehee Parkway and Winchester Road. According to the report from MAPD, the driver was shot in the thigh and taken to Regional One Health.
According to the report, another rideshare driver told investigators that four men wearing masks in a light gray or white sedan - possibly a Malibu or Toyota - approached the two of them asking for help inflating a tire. The witness said one of the suspects asked for money for an air pump at a gas station, and when he said he did not have any money, the suspect pulled out a gun and asked for his keys.
The witness said he gave the suspect his keys and the four guys tried to take it but couldn't get it in gear. He said the suspect with the gun then took his wallet, and asked the victim for the keys to his vehicle.
The witness said the victim told the suspects he was not giving up his car, and that's when one of the suspects shot him. The witness said the suspect then took the victim's keys and tried to take off in that car, but again could not get it into gear. The witness said the suspects took off in the car they drove up in.
Airport police said they later got surveillance pictures from a convenience store where the suspects tried to use a stolen debit card.
According to MAPD, the crime was an isolated incident and the investigation is ongoing.
