MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Police Department (MPD) announced two local teens have been charged so far in the threats against Memphis-area schools this week.
MPD announced Friday that five people had been detained, and two teens were subsequently charged with threats of mass violence on school property. The onslaught of threats Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, led MSCS to lockdown all of its campuses across the city.
Investigators said a 15-year-old boy is charged with making threats to Whitehaven High School, and a 16-year-old boy is charged with making threats to Cordova High School.
“Threats of mass violence in the City of Memphis are unacceptable,” said MPD. “We will continue to ensure the safety and protection of students and staff by working with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.”
The announcement of these latest charges comes after the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said Thursday that they charged a 15-year-old boy in Nashville for threats made to Southwind High School.
Memphis-Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins previously said five people have been “arrested” in connection with the threats Wednesday and Thursday across the Mid-South.
